Nissan is facing a serious financial crisis, with losses of $4.5 billion over the past year. As part of a recovery plan called “Re:Nissan”, the automaker has decided to suspend the development of some new vehicles, especially those scheduled beyond the 2026 fiscal year.
Around 3,000 research and development employees have been reassigned to cost-cutting initiatives, while the company also announced the closure of seven factories and the dismissal of up to 20,000 workers.
Despite the pause in the development of some models, Nissan claims this will not delay product launches. The strategy now is to speed up production processes, reducing the time needed to bring a new vehicle to market from 52 to 37 months, and derivative versions to just 30 months. To meet this goal, the company is simplifying operations by cutting the number of production platforms from 13 to 7 and reducing part complexity by up to 70%.
The first models of this new phase include a global compact crossover and another vehicle under the Infiniti brand, likely aimed at the North American market. The automaker also plans to strengthen its alliance with Renault and Mitsubishi and maintain collaboration with Honda on electrification projects.
Still, the outlook remains concerning, with an intense focus on cost reduction and no plans for mergers at this time.
